Roanoke, Virginia (VR) – On July 4, the people of Roanoke and surrounding communities will gather peacefully at the Poff Federal Building in downtown Roanoke to denounce the Supreme Court’s radical decision to strip the women of this country of a fundamental civil liberty and overturn “Roe vs Wade.”
Countless citizens of this country are now at risk. The Court’s ruling threatens not only pregnant women, but so many other citizens whose lives, safety and happiness depend on the precedent that “Roe v. Wade” set for right-to-privacy standards on countless other rulings.
We fear for marriage equality. We fear for access to contraception. We fear for the health and safety of our LGBTQ citizens.
This extreme ruling erodes years of hard work for women’s rights and is a serious blow to our legal system.
It is an extreme and radical decision to strip this country’s women of a Constitutional right by the very Court who is supposed to protect us from extreme and radical rulings. We fear that this is only the beginning of extreme measures by this Court.
Justice Thomas has written that while it was, “strictly true that the majority opinion addressed only abortion, its logic required the Court to reconsider decisions about contraception, gay sex and same-sex marriage.”
This dangerous and tragic error by the Supreme Court cannot be ignored. We cannot stand quietly aside while citizens are stripped of their freedoms, and their lives are put in danger.
In America, we should be free to make our own choice about our bodies.
In America, a judge’s religious beliefs should not give weight to their rulings.
In America, all people should be equally free.
This is why, on July 4, 2022, we will not be celebrating America’s independence. We will be fighting for all its citizens’ fundamental and constitutional rights and for an America where we’re all free.
We will gather on July 4, 2022 at 11am in front of the Poff Federal Building in downtown Roanoke. We will be registering citizens to vote and teaching them how to contact their government representatives. We will have keynote speakers that include Senator John S. Edwards, Kiesha Preston, and a representative from the Roanoke County Democratic Committee.
