November 7, 1977- Clifton Forge's Les Tinsley catches a pass for good yardage and Covington's Donnell Ross makes the tackle during the Little Brown Jug football game Saturday night at Memorial Park in Clifton Forge. The prolonged rain stopped long enough for the game to be played and Covington kept possession of the jug by roaring to a 36-0 halftime lead and going on to win 42-6. Photo: Virginian Review

The Alleghany Mountaineers JV baseball team’s run to the top of the junior varsity division of the Three Rivers District, was cut short on Friday evening as the Carroll County Cavaliers defeated the Mounties 7-1 in the district championship game.

After defeating Glenvar on Wednesday 11-1 in which the team collected seven total hits, the Mounties offense was held in check by the Cavaliers who held them to one run and just four total hits.

In the championship game the Mounties had four players finish with one hit each. Gavin Via (0-for-2), had the teams only RBI.

Brady May (L, 0-for-2), suffered the loss for the Mounties on the bound. In his 3.2 innings pitched in, May, allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out four. Chase DePriest (0-for-3), relieved May, and allowed one run across his two innings he pitched in.

The Cavaliers collected nine hits as a team where they finished with three players having two or more hits.

The Mounties never found themselves with a chance at potentially putting on the tying runs later in the game after falling behind early 6-1.

While the season didn’t end as the way they hopes, this Mounties team has plenty to look back on and be proud of including a 13-win season and trip to the district championship game.
