Richmond, VA — The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is thrilled to announce the beginning of the 9th season for the Virginia Elk Cam! Experience the restored elk herd, often referred to as Appalachia’s Greatest Conservation Success Story, on your phone, tablet, or computer any time through December.
Located on reclaimed mine land in Buchanan County, the camera scans a field frequented by elk, especially during early morning, evening, and nighttime hours. As the weather cools, elk are more active during the day. Elk also share the landscape with other wildlife that appear on camera, such as deer and turkeys, the occasional black bear or coyote, and more.
The Virginia Elk Cam typically goes live in September; however, this year the elk weren’t spending time in the fields within view of the camera until recently. They have resumed their previous patterns and are now frequently seen in view of the camera – ready for viewers to enjoy.
New this year, DWR has partnered with Southwest Virginia Sportsmen to implement enhanced viewing notifications. To learn more about this service, visit SWVA Sportsmen online.
