In 1990 John McCain introduced formal legislation to designate May as National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) and both houses of Congress approved. This month is set aside to bring awareness and celebration to those who served in our Armed Forces and those who are currently serving. Curtis A Smith VFW Post 1033 and Auxiliary strive to do this year round through our celebrations, memorials, cards to veterans hospitals and our waving of the red, white and blue. It can also be seen at our local post office where we celebrate veterans on their Wall of Honor. Currently we are honoring soldiers of World War II. We take this time to remember and honor the sacrifices made by so many American men and women.
There are many individual days in May dedicated to honoring our veterans. We only name some here. The first is Loyalty Day (May 1) which was established in 1921. This day begins the month-long celebration of remembering our loyalty to the United States and our freedom. One of the most important days in May is Victory in Europe (VE) Day (May 8) which commemorates the Germans’ departure from France and the end of World War II in 1945. A complete list of the May celebration days can be found on Helping Heroes.org.
The last and most nationally celebrated day is Memorial Day. This year Memorial Day falls on May 30th. This day commemorates the men and women who died while in military service and made the greatest sacrifice for our country. Each year VFW Post 1033 honors all these veterans with a service on the Courthouse grounds. Come out and help us salute these brave men and women who made it possible for us to have the freedoms we do today. God bless America and all these veterans and their families.
One of the ways you can honor these men and women is with a simple “thank you” when you see them in the community. Let us never let them be forgotten.
