James Kavanaugh, co-founder and chief executive officer of World Wide Technology, Inc., was the commencement speaker for the 2022 VMI Corps of Cadets at VMI on Monday, May 16.
Born in St. Louis, Mo. in1963, Kavanaugh was introduced by Cadet Noah E. Kirk of the Class of 2022. Kirk is from Woodbridge, Va.
Prior to Kavanaugh’s address, the VMI Regimental Band performed musical selections, an academic procession was held, the National Anthem followed and Colonel Robert E. Phillips (1987) Chaplin to the Corps of Cadets, gave the invocation.
Superintendent Major General Cedric T. Wins (1985) made his remarks, and Cadet Christopher M. Huburt from El Paso, Texas, presented his valedictory address.
Following Kavanaugh address, Superintendent Wins resided over honors and awards.
Colonel Robert L. McDonald, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, presided over the presentation of candidates for degrees, and Superintendent Wins led the conferring of degrees.
Following Colonel Phillips’ benediction, the VMI Regimental Band performed “The Spirit.”
VMI was established in 1839, was burned during the American Civil War and was an all-male public education institution during the 19th century and the 20th century. The last all-male class was the Class of 2000.
