Party Chairmen Vote To Hold Primary To Choose Nominees
The Democratic Party candidate for the Twentieth Senatorial District, and the Democratic Party candidate for the House of Delegates from Alleghany County will be chosen in a primary to be held on August 5. This decision to name party nominees by primary rather than convention was made at a meeting Saturday night of chairmen of the party from the various units that make up the two districts.

LBJ In State Hospital
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson was admitted to the University of Virginia Hospital’s cardiac unit early today suffering from chest pains. Dr. Richard S. Crampton, associate professor of internal medicine at the hospital here and Johnson’s physician, said the former president is comfortable, his condition stable, and he is undergoing tests. Dr. Crampton declined to say specifically that the ex-president had suffered a heart attack.

Harrison Speaks At Annual King Banquet
The Rev. James M. Harrison of Smithfield, former Pine Street Baptist Church pastor, addressed over 150 persons attending the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Loyalty Banquet at Best Western Saturday night. He noted that what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. accomplished with his non-violent civil rights movement before his assassination “contributed not just to the African-American community but to all segments of our country and our world.” Harrison went on to urge all segments of the Alleghany Highlands Community, as they have shown the capacity to do in the past, to work together as one community to focus on being “proactive and preventive in the continuing fight against evil.”
Roanoke Man Injured in Accidental Shooting
Jeffrey Iversen, 24, of Roanoke, told Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department deputies called to the Comfort Inn about 9:30 p.m. Saturday by a report of a accidentally shot himself in the hand while cleaning his semi-automatic 9mm handgun in his room.

“DMV 2 Go” Visiting Douthat State Park
The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ mobile customer service center, called “DMV 2 Go,” is selling fishing licenses at Douthat State Park in conjunction with the opening of trout season, which began Friday. Thanks to a new partnership with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, DMV customers can now buy fishing and hunting licenses and temporary boat registrations at any DMV customer service center, including the mobile offices.
Sa’Mone Moore Selected To All-State Team
The honors keep coming for Covington sophomore Sa’Mone Moore. Moore, who led the Cougar girls basketball team to the Group A, Division 1 state championship game, has been named to the second team of the all-state team by the Virginia High School Coaches Association.
