November 7, 1977- Clifton Forge's Les Tinsley catches a pass for good yardage and Covington's Donnell Ross makes the tackle during the Little Brown Jug football game Saturday night at Memorial Park in Clifton Forge. The prolonged rain stopped long enough for the game to be played and Covington kept possession of the jug by roaring to a 36-0 halftime lead and going on to win 42-6. Photo: Virginian Review

Head Coach, Seth Davis, has his Alleghany Mountaineers (4-0) Boys Tennis team to off to a blazing 4-0 start following an 8-1 victory over the Narrows Green Wave on Tuesday evening in the teams home opener.

“Some of our guys have progressed better than I thought. We have a lot of work to do though, and have tougher opponents coming up”, said Coach Davis.

The Mounties lone loss in the 8-1 victory came in singles where J. Freeman defeated Baron Leitch. Leitch bounced back with doubles teammate Coree Nicely and picked up an 8-3 doubles victory. The duo are undefeated in doubles matches this season. The Mounties as a team are undefeated in doubles this season thus far at 12-0.

In the teams doubleheader sweep of Bassett last Friday, McKinley Goodbar dropped two singles matches, but bounced back on Tuesday with a dominant 8-1 victory over J. Walkup.

The Mounties have several first time players on the team that have stepped up and helped pick up victories for the team. Going forward as the season progresses, their experience winning early will certain help the team as those tougher opponents come by.

“They’re definitely important. Eli Entsminger and McKinley Goodbar are in the top six and Andrew Cole is making a push. Entsminger’s super athletic and its great he’s only a freshman. Everyone has a team-first attitude so far, which is easier when you’re winning. Hopefully, we’ll maintain that when adversity hits”, said Coach Davis.

The Mounties are now 2-0 on the season against the Green Wave.

Next up for the Mounties, the team travels to Staunton to take on the Riverheads Gladiators. Coach Davis said that the Gladiators have 13 players with three only having previous experience. The Gladiators defeated Fort Defiance 7-2 on Monday.
