Congress Acts To Mollify UN.
Bipartisan congressional drive got underway today to notify the world that the plan to shore up Greece and Turkey against Communism conforms with United Nations’ “principles and purposes.” Chairman Vandenberg,(R-Mich.), of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senator Connally(D-Tex), offered that declaration as a formal preamble to a measure authorizing President Truman to send the two southern European countries $400,000,000 in aid. The plan, obviously intended to meet head-on charges in Congress and foreign capitals that this country is snubbing the international organization, was advanced even as the administration was reportedly weighing a plan for reaffirming its support in the U.N.

Peace Talks Ended By Nixon Order
President Nixon says he personally ordered the Paris peace talks suspended because North Vietnam has conducted a three-and-a-half-year filibuster for propaganda purposes. “I am not saying that this move is going to bring a negotiation,” the President said in a 30-minute impromptu news conference Friday afternoon. “I do say, however, that it was necessary to do something to get the talks off dead center and to see whether the enemy continued to want to use the talks only for propaganda or whether they wanted to negotiate.” He also told reporters gathered in the Oval Office in the White House that the United States would return to the peace talks when the North Vietnamese indicated they would negotiate seriously.

C.P.Jones Library Has Served Highlands For Over 68 Years; New Space Is Critical
For 68 years the Charles P. Jones Library has been providing library services to the residents of the Alleghany Highlands. The establishment of this library was a prime example of a grassroots movement that arose from the citizens themselves. Interest in a public library had been expressed by several civic organizations for many years but actually began to make progress in 1928. Prior to then, the widow of Charles P. Jones, a prominent Covington attorney, had willed her husband’s private library of 750 books to be used as the nucleus for a public library. First Bookmobile In Highlands
The C.P. Jones Library in Covington which serves the city and Alleghany County began operation of a bookmobile in 1943. This service continued until 1981 when maintenance costs made it prohibitively expensive. The bookmobile is shown here at one of the schools in Alleghany County. (C.P. Jones Library file Photo)

Unhappy Public Not Sure Who To Blame For High Gas Prices
Families canceling vacations. Fishermen watching their profits burn up along with their boats’ gasoline. Drivers buying only a few gallons of gas at a time because they can’t afford to fill the tank. From all corners of the country, Americans are irritated these days by record-high fuel prices that have soared above $4 a gallon in some states and could top $5 by summer. And the cost is becoming a political issue just as the presidential campaign kicks into high gear.
