LOW MOOR, VA (VR) — Four Alleghany High School students recently participated in the Next Steps Theatre Intensives at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, gaining valuable training and experience in the performing arts.
Paisley Brooks, Amelia Caldwell, Adrienne Downs, and Axl Vanskike took part in the week-long program at James Madison University June 22-27. They joined high school theatre students from across Virginia for workshops led by professional actors and JMU theatre faculty. The students participated in intensive instruction, performance exercises and coaching designed to strengthen their acting skills.
Hosted by JMU’s Forbes Center for the Performing Arts, the program ended with a showcase performance where each student presented a prepared monologue. The Forbes Center offered ideal space for the program, with dance studios, rehearsal rooms, and several performance venues for students to learn and perform.
Beyond the classroom and rehearsal space, the students connected with other young performers from across the commonwealth, experienced campus life, and gained insight into the expectations of college-level theatre programs.
The students’ participation was supported through NextStage Arts, a customized learning program created to give students more opportunities in the visual and performing arts. The program was made possible through a $50,000 innovation grant awarded to Alleghany Highlands Public Schools by the Virginia Department of Education. The funding helps provide AHS students with hands-on arts experiences, including opportunities to learn from professionals and participate in programs beyond the classroom.
Ella Hicks, an AHS Class of 2025 graduate, assisted AHPS Superintendent Kim Halterman in securing the competitive grant and was recently recognized by the Alleghany Highlands School Board with an Outstanding Volunteerism Award in recognition of her dedication and service. AHS teachers Heather Brooks and Adam Eggleston coordinated the implementation of the grant.
“Programs like Next Steps Theatre allow students to learn from experienced professionals, build confidence and connect with others who share their passion for the arts,” said Brooks. “We appreciate the support that makes these experiences possible and look forward to seeing students bring their newly-learned skills and perspectives back to our school this fall.”
Through creative programs like NextStage Arts, AHPS is continuing to expand access to meaningful hands-on learning experiences for students and prepare them for the future. These opportunities allow students to explore their interests, develop new skills and gain experiences that support personal growth and future academic and career goals.
