After receiving a bye in the 2021-22 Region 2C girls basketball tournament, the Alleghany Mountaineers eliminated the Nelson County Governors on Monday evening, 53-34 at Mountaineer Gym.
In the first quarter, both teams were struggling to put points on the scoreboard. The Mountaineers shot 2-for-16 from the field in the quarter, including 1-for-10 from behind the arc, while the Governors shot 1-for-7. Yet, the Mountaineers took a 5-3 lead by the quarters end.
The Mountaineers jumped out at the start of the second quarter by going on a 15-2 scoring run, including scoring 13 straight unanswered points to take a 20-5 lead. By halftime, the Mountaineers led 29-7. The Mountaineers were lifted by their three-point shooting in the second quarter. The team shot 5-for-7 from behind the arc in the quarter.
Following an Erin Harden layup that put the Mountaineers ahead 31-7 to start the third quarter, the Governors would go on and score eight straight points to cut the lead down to 31-15.
The lead though proved to be insurmountable to the Governors, as the team would be unable to gain anymore ground and watched the Mountaineers lead grow as high as 28 points by the end of the third quarter.
The Mountaineers were led by Macyn Cash’s game-high 15 points. Cash, was front and center for the Mountaineers 24-point second quarter. Cash, scored nine points, all coming on three-pointers in which she shot 3-for-3 in the quarter. Meanwhile, Harden, finished with 13 points and a game-high five steals.
For the Governors, the team was led by Rachel Thompson and Tamya Vest-Turner, whom each scored nine points. Chandler Giles, finished with a game-high seven rebounds. The Governors had only seven players suited up.
Up next for the Mountaineers, the team heads to Roanoke College on Thursday to play the Floyd County Buffaloes in the Region 2C semifinals.
Not only are the two teams playing for a chance in the tournament championship game, but the winner will also receive a berth in the state tournament.
The Mountaineers and Buffaloes split their regular season games. On January 25th, the Mountaineers defeated the Buffaloes at Mountaineer Gym 68-61, while just 12 days ago, the Buffaloes held on to beat the Mountaineers at home 47-43.
