Carlee Lanford delivered her best offensive performance in what could be described as the Alleghany Lady Mountaineers (13-2-2) biggest victory in the girls soccer program history following a 6-2 victory over the Appomattox County Raiders in the Region 2C quarterfinals at Mountaineer Field on Friday.

In what was the school programs second ever regional tournament game (both at home), the Lady Mounties avenged their loss last season in the quarterfinals by winning on Friday.

In Friday’s win, Lanford, led the way with a game and season-high four goals. Prior to the game, Lanford’s season-high in goals had been three which came in a season opening win over William Fleming. The senior has had five games this season where she’s scored at least two goals.

This isn’t the first time Lanford has been huge contributor in a big game situation. Last season in the Lady Mounties first ever winning season, Lanford, had two goals in a Lady Mounties 5-1 victory over Nelson County. It wasn’t just any regular victory for the Lady Mounties either. The win secured the Lady Mounties their first ever winning season in school program history.

Meanwhile, the Lady Mounties leading scorer, Kinley Eggleston, scored two goals. Eggleston continued with her record performance year as she now as 37 goals on the season.

On the defensive side of the field, senior, Payton Reynolds, led the way with a team-high three steals, while sophomore, Faith Howell contributed with one steal. The Lady Mounties had four total steals in the win.

While the Raiders did score two goals against Lady Mounties senior goalkeeper, Emma Williams, it wasn’t nearly enough as Williams secured six saves in the win. It was only the fourth time this season that a team has scored at least two goals against Williams.

The Lady Mounties are now one win away from the regional finals.

The team hosts Dan River Wildcats (13-3-1) at the Smith River Complex in Axton, VA this evening at 6:00 p.m. The two teams only have had only one common opponent in the Raiders. While the Lady Mounties defeated the Raiders in the regional quarterfinals on Friday, the Wildcats and Raiders split two matches this season.
