Today’s Headline: Council Passes Resolution As To Monroe Street.
In a special meeting held yesterday afternoon, the Covington town council passed one resolution required by the state department of highways for the construction of Monroe Street.
The council decided to furnish all necessary funds above the amount allocated for this purpose for the construction of this street which amounted to $1,335, or about 10 percent above the contract price of $11,050.
Work on the new highway from Crow’s Tavern to Sweet Chalybeate is progressing rapidly and should be completed within 60 days, it was learned today.

Today’s Headline: Transaction Complete For Property Of Country Club.
The Alleghany County Country Club has purchased the house and 24 acres of land, which is part of their farm, from Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Talbott. The transaction was consummate yesterday by club President Roscoe B. Stephenson Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Talbott, just before Stephenson left on a long planned vacation trip to Vermont.
J. Leo Monroe of the Clifton Forge Fire Department was re-elected in absentia as second vice-president of the Virginia State Firemen’s Association at the 75th convention Wednesday in Hampton.

Today’s Headline: VFW Dinner Held.
Approximately 200 people were in attendance Sunday at the Post Home on Dolly Ann Drive to observe the 50th anniversary of Covington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033.
The program for the evening began with the National Anthem by Comrade Danny Vess, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance by Post 1033 Commander Bill Pfoutz and God Bless America, also by Vess.
The eighth annual StreetScene was held in Covington Saturday in the downtown area, drawing several thousand spectators.

Today’s Headline: No Announcement Made About AET Job Reduction.
No decisions have been announced about job reductions at the Covington AET Film Plant.
Reports concerning layoffs and the future of the plant have been circulating in the Highlands region for several weeks.
Company officials say the reports are untrue, however they say operations at the Covington plant are being evaluated as part of a company-wide restructuring.
