Today’s Headline: Aged Resident Of White Rock Gap Killed Instantly When Hit By C&O Passenger Train.
Hurled 60 feet when he was struck at 9:30 this morning by No. 16 C&O eastbound passenger train, about a quarter of a mile west of Selma, Dave Defibaugh, aged resident of White Rock Gap, was killed instantly.
The fatal accident occurred as Defibaugh, who was 72 years old, was walking down a straight stretch of track in the direction of Clifton Forge.
The aged man, apparently failing to hear or see the rapidly approaching train, is believed to have crossed the eastbound track directly in its path.

Today’s Headline: J.E. Owens Is New Principal Of Falling Spring School.
James E. Owens, principal of Iron Gate and Sharon schools, was selected by the Alleghany County School Board to succeed Robert H. Smoot as principal of Falling Spring School at yesterday’s regular meeting.
At the regular meeting of the Falling Spring Fire Department held at Falling Spring School on Mon., Aug. 7, 1961, the department members voted unanimously to accept one and five-eighths acres of land donated to the fire department by Frank Sponaugle of Falling Spring.
The site for the fire department is located on Route 687 near Frank’s Cash Store.

Today’s Headline: Vandalism At High School.
The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a vandalism which occurred at Alleghany High School sometime between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the sheriff’s department, someone entered the building, which was unlocked and splashed paint on the walls in the music room, where contractors had been painting that day.
Damage was estimated at $400.

Today’s Headline: City Eyes Used Equipment Policy.
Covington City Council met Tuesday night and held discussions on a newly proposed policy that would set in place a plan for dealing with surplus equipment once new equipment is purchased.
Questions raised by members of council prevented a vote on the policy Tuesday.
