Today’s Headline: Longest & Liveliest Session of School Board Held.
It was the longest and the liveliest session of the Alleghany County School Board ever held, if old-timers are to be believed in the matter of yesterday’s meeting of the board at the courthouse.
The Salvation Army has acquired its own building on the corner of Highland Oak streets. Renovations and alterations are in progress.
When completed, the building will have an auditorium to seat 100 people, with an additional building to take care of relief.

Today’s Headline: Clubs To Exhibit Next Week At Alleghany Fair.
The semi-finals of the “Miss Alleghany” beauty contest will be held Tues., Aug. 8, with the finals Fri., Aug. 11.
Sat. Aug. 12, will be the last night of the fair.
The gates will open at the entrance to the Covington Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. nightly.
Elmer Lee Honaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Honaker of Monroe Draft Road, Caldwell, W.Va., was the honoree at a birthday party Thurs., July 27.

Today’s Headline: Group Forms To Oppose Consolidation.
Covington citizens in favor of annexation and opposed to consolidation of the area governments formed an organization Monday night to combat efforts to merge the city with Alleghany County and Clifton Forge.
Approximately 90 residents filled Covington High School’s Curfman Hall and formed an organization which supports Covington’s past to annex 3.7 square miles of Alleghany County, a plan which failed to win the support of the Commission on Local Government in 1984.

Today’s Headline: David Rollinson Completes 3,000 Mile Bicycle Trek.
It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
A journey of 3,000 miles, however, requires a bicycle.
David Rollinson, of Clifton Forge, recently completed a cross-country bicycle trek spanning nine states and 3,950 miles in just 48 days.
