Today’s Headline: Captain Hicks To Give Exhibition Fancy Shooting.
The public is invited to be present at Fudge Farm at 3:30 Thursday Aug. 20 to witness the free shooting exhibition that will be put on there by Capt. M.E. Hicks, on of the world’s greatest marksmen.
All kinds of difficult shots will be exhibited with all types of guns, including light rifle, heavy caliber, rifles, revolvers and shotguns.

Today’s Headline: Public Hearing Scheduled To Extend Route 220 Within Covington Limits.
A public hearing is to be held by the state highway department Sept. 13 in Covington to consider a proposed extension of the improvement on U.S. Route 220 in Covington from Washington Avenue to the north city limits.
Proposed improvements include two 24-foot roadways divided by a 16-foot median, also curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
This would extend the street widening which was completed last September from Hickory Street to Washington Street and would complete the relocating or rebuilding of U.S. 220 to the north corporate limits.

Today’s Headline: Hoke Chapel Homecoming Sunday.
Hoke Chapel United Methodist Church, located on Ogles Creek, Route 1, Covington, will hold its annual Homecoming on Sunday to celebrate its 118th anniversary.
The earliest recorded date for Hoke Chapel was Nov. 25, 1868.
The church building was dedicated as Hoke Chapel in memory of William and Catherine Hoke in 1923 and has since been known as a house of worship, serving God and this community since that early date.
Erin Dale, daughter of Donald and Della Dale of Clifton Forge, was named Rookie of the Year for 1986 by the coaches of her swimming team, the Tinker View Tarpons and has a handful of ribbons from her first season as a competitive swimmer.

Today’s Headline: Military Family With Ties To Area Is Featured In New Video.
A military family with ties to Alleghany County is featured in a Sesame Street video released this month.
Sesame Workshop produced the DVD that was distributed to military families. The video is designed to help families deal with Mom or Dads with lengthy deployment overseas.
Featured in the DVD are Trica Kite, her husband, Michael, and children Kelsie, 9; Gavin, 8; Kassidy, 5, and Grant, 7.
