Today’s Headline: Two Cases Settled In Court By Handshakes.
Two cases ended in handshakes today as Justice R.E. Dyche dismissed two warrants in trial court, one which charged T.M. Gathright with unlawfully shooting in the direction of four young men who were fishing from a boat in the Jackson River and the other a cross warrant charging three of the young men with trespassing on Mr. Gathright’s property.
Active work began this morning in preparation for the erection of the new highway bridge which will cross the Jackson River and C&O Railway yards at Clifton Forge.

Today’s Headline: Committee Advances Plans For Monument Rededication.
The Covington-Alleghany Civil War Centennial Committee planning the rededication of the Confederate monument in Covington met Wednesday evening in the Nettleton Reception Center to discuss progress of the arrangements.
The ceremony will take place on Sat., Sept. 16.
At a called meeting held at the county courthouse Wednesday afternoon, the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors refused to grant the immediate consent for the construction of a large bowling alley near the Dolly Ann Spring without more detailed information.

Today’s Headline: Zany Follies Begin At Curfman Hall.
The 1986 Zany Follies got underway Friday night at Curfman Hall under the direction of Allan Tucker.
The annual Zany Follies is sponsored by the Covington-West Alleghany Unit of the American Cancer Society.
The second performance will be tonight at 8 p.m.
Entertainment includes the chorus and solos by area residents with music provided by Elizabeth Leitch, Phil Sansam and Barry Taylor.

Today’s Headline: May Adrales Receives Masters Degree From Yale.
May Adrales, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Mamerto and Jocelyn Adrales, and a native of Covington, graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale School of Drama in May 2006.
May graduated from Alleghany High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia.
