Today’s Headline: Honor Memory Of Late Judge G.A. Anderson.
Honoring the memory of the late George A. Anderson of Clifton Forge, more than 100 of his friends assembled Saturday afternoon in the courtroom of the Clifton Forge City Hall witnessed the unveiling of his portrait and heard his character and ability eulogized by his oldest friends in western Virginia and by his successor, Judge Benjamin Haden.
Judge Anderson held court throughout the circuit until his death in 1930.
Mr. Lucian Saul, of South Covington, who underwent a tonsil operation Friday , is doing nicely at his home.

Today’s Headline: Low Moor Boy Drowns As He Swims In Pike’s Pond.
Ronald Nathaniel Scott, 15, apparently suffered a sudden cramp in deep water near the bank of Pike’s Pond at Low Moor while swimming with a group of friends yesterday afternoon and drowned despite efforts to save him. He was the first drowning fatality of the year in Alleghany County.
The Clifton Forge Rescue Squad recovered Scott’s body after dragging the pond for 45 minutes. The body was later taken to Dyke’s Funeral Home in Covington.
The Covington Fire Department will stage its 1961 pre-convention parade at 7 p.m. tomorrow. The parade has been held every Friday before the annual convention of the Virginia State Firemen’s Association since 1904.

Today’s Headline: Former Local, State VFW Commander Curtis Smith Dies.
Curtis Aubrey Smith, 66, former Post 1033, district and state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, died Friday at Alleghany Regional Hospital of a sudden illness.
Extremely active in the VFW, he had also served on the National Council and was currently a member of a national committee.
Just prior to his death, he had appeared on a radio show with announcer Dwight Rohr Friday morning discussing the scheduled Aug. 9 celebration of Post 1033’s 50th anniversary.

Today’s Headline: Mary Parker Ramsey Marks 101st Birthday.
Mary Parker Ramsey celebrated 101st birthday, Sat., July 22 at Liberty House Nursing Home.
She was born at Big Island in 1905, but lived most of her life in Clifton Forge.
She is the widow of Daniel Boone Ramsey who died in 1953.
