ELLISTON – Six sets into their season, the Covington volleyball team finds themselves 2-0 after dispatching Eastern Montgomery in straight sets Tuesday night.
The Lady Cougars knocked off the Mustangs 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 to pick up their second win in as many nights.
Covington can polish off a perfect week Thursday with a win over rival Alleghany.
“The girls played well tonight,” said Covington coach Mary Tyree. “They worked together and played with a lot of enthusiasm.
“We still have a lot of work to do, but I am very pleased with their progress,” added Tyree.
Sophomore Leteashia Clarke paced the Cougars with eight kills, five blocks and three aces, while fellow sophomore Sa’Mone Moore hammered down five kills in the win.
Senior Shanna Woodward served up 18 points to go along with four aces, two kills and two blocks, while junior Briana Moore added 13 points, two kills, one block and an ace.
Senior setter Daylin Tyree contributed 20 assists, 11 points, three kills and two aces, while fellow senior Larissa Moore added two kills, a block and one ace.
Kristina Huffman chipped in one kill in the victory.
Thursday’s game at Alleghany begins at 5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity game.
The Covington junior varsity team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 25-20, 25-22 win over the East Mont jayvees.
Emily Comer paced the Cougars with 13 points, while Megan Jefferson and Kelsey young scored nine points each.
Taylor Ginger finished with six points, Autumn Woodson, Burke Staunton and Laramie McCallister added four points each and Mikayla Andrews rounded out the Covington scoring with one point.
