MONETA - The Alleghany baseball team picked up a much needed win Friday with a 1-0 Blue Ridge District victory over the Staunton River Golden Eagles.
“This was a good win for us,” said Alleghany coach Gary Rice. “We needed a district win after playing poorly the previous two games.”
Sophomore Alex Javins went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. Javins scattered five hits over seven innings pitched, striking out five and walking seven.
“It was good to get a complete game from Alex,” added Rice. “He looked good at times but he still needs to get the number of walks down. We also played well defensively, recording 13 assists.”
The Mountaineers broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Ashby Taylor singled, moved to second on Kendall Kessinger’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Jerrod Groves’ RBI single.
Taylor and Taylor Carter led Alleghany at the plate with perfect 2-for-2 days, while Groves and Derek O’Connor had one hit each.
Alleghany (9-2, 1-2 BRD) will be back in action next Thursday at home against William Byrd.
