Today’s Headline: Good Old Squire Tyree Passes Away.
The death of Mr. William Alexander Tyree, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Thompson at 123 Virginia Avenue at 7:30 Monday evening, marks the passing of one of the oldest and best known residents of Alleghany County where he had spent his entire life.
Lemuel Dewitt Keyser, 93, a former Confederate veteran, died today after a week’s illness.
Keyser was born in Bath County and served in the 11th Virginia Cavalry.
He was captured at Gettysburg and spent a year in prison.

Mrs. Robert Quate Jr. was elected president of the South Covington Home Demonstration Club at the June meeting, held Tues., June 20 at 10 a.m. in the county club room.
Douglas G. Weiford, city manager of Eau Claire, Wis., will fill his father’s pulpit at First Methodist Church Sunday at 11 a.m. He is the son of the Rev. D.N. Weiford.

Today’s Headline: Resident Reportedly Beaten By Off-Duty City Policeman.
An Alleghany County resident was severely beaten by an off-duty Covington police sergeant Sunday afternoon according to an unofficial reports following an altercation which took place on the Jackson River on a camp site.
Harold Benton Dressler, 58, of Clearwater Park, was listed in serious condition in Roanoke Memorial Hospital following the Sunday incident.

A Covington woman has been charged with attempted murder in connection with an incident that occurred Thursday in the Dolly Ann area.
Roberta Phillips Doyle, 24, of Mount Pleasant Drive, has been charged with attempted murder.
