Three young Covington men narrowly escaped death or serious injury last night when a light coupe in which they were riding overturned several times near Beth Manor, three miles west of Covington on U.S. Route 60.
George Taylor, driver of the car, received minor cuts to the face and bruises, while Larkin Hart and Horace Powers, the occupants of the car, were bruised.

Today’s Headline: Charles Hammond Receives Scout God & Country Award.
Charles Barnett Hammond was recipient of the God & Country award from the Boy Scouts of America yesterday at First Presbyterian Church, which was presented by the Rev. Dr. Hubert Morris, pastor of Hammond’s church.
The Covington office of the Virginia Employment Commission has hired James E. McEwen, 23, of Johnson City, Tenn., as an employee service interviewer, effective Monday, June 19.

Today’s Headline: Douthat Park Cited As A Landmark.
Douthat State Park was designated a national and state historic landmark Tuesday, which places the 50-year-old park on the national and state landmark registers.
The designation Tuesday follows the 50th anniversary of the opening of Douthat on June 15, 1936, by two days.
The land for Douthat was donated by the Douthat Land Company. The late Kent Ford of Clifton Forge was the park’s first superintendent and created the hiking trails used today.
