Dear Editor,
I attended the Clifton Forge Town Council meeting on June 14 that addressed the issue of the proposed increase in water and sewer rates for a second time.
I was very pleased at the number of citizens that were in attendance and hoped to hear not just their concerns but viable suggestions on how best to tackle this issue.
Unfortunately, there was an aspect of this meeting that gives me grave concern both as a citizen and a Clifton Forge business owner.
I was not only embarrassed but angered because many of the residents that signed up to speak were heckled during their remarks, as well as, a guest speaker from out of town.
Sitting in the back of the room, I could hardly hear what was being said in many cases. We do not have to agree with one another, but we should at least show respect for one another’s opinions and comments; and in addition, show respect for established rules that govern these types of proceedings.
Progress and growth are paramount if my business and the town of Clifton Forge are to survive. The image projected by these citizens can only serve to cause a negative, rather than a positive, impact on more industries, businesses, and tourists considering coming to our town.
It is my hope that these citizens realize the negative consequences of their rude behavior and will conduct themselves in a more civilized and respectful manner in the future.
I also hope that they will listen with the same regard for other speakers that they expect when they speak.
I applaud those citizens who conducted themselves according to the procedures as outlined for this meeting and who also offered constructive alternatives in regard to this issue, because as a result, the C.F. Council will be taking these suggestions into consideration before voting on any increase. Your voice can be heard.
Sincerely,
Jo Ann Carter Gideons
