HOT SPRINGS - Frank “Toopie” G. Thompson Jr., 78, of 10542 Jackson River Turnpike, Bacova, passed away Friday, March 11, 2011, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
He was born Feb. 28, 1933, in Hot Springs, the son of the late Frank G. Thompson Sr. and Elizabeth Loving Thompson.
He was married to his wife of 35 years, Nancy Lee Thompson.
They were married July 31, 1971. She preceded him in death July 19, 2007.
He was preceded in death by a son, Robin G. Thompson.
He was a retired golf professional. He started working as a caddy at The Homestead Resort as a young boy.
He later moved to Sea Island, Ga., where he started his career as a golf professional. In 1964, he moved to Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, where he was the head golf professional.
He came back to the states in 1969 and later worked at The Landings In Savannah, Ga.,a where he retired.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the Professional Golf Association and Warm Springs Presbyterian Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was known as a very generous man.
He is survived by a daughter, Shelly T. Plecker and husband, Ricky of Millboro; four grandchildren, Meagan Plecker of Williamsburg, Travis Plecker and wife, Chelsi, of Millboro, Emily Plecker of Roanoke, Heather Thompson of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Phyllis Knight of Virginia; a mother-in-law, Jean Myers of Stuarts Draft; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Brenda Myers of Staunton; and six nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Warm Springs Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles Reed and the Rev. David George officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the services until 5 p.m. in the church social hall.
