For decades, Alleghany County’s tax rate has been higher than that of any other county in this area. This year, the tax rate is being reduced to $1.25, against Rockbridge County’s tax rate of $1.06.

Today’s Headline: Gathright Dam To Be Pursued.
Members of the Board of Directors of the Covington Chamber of Commerce met yesterday afternoon and spent most of the time discussing reactivation of efforts to make the Gathright Dam a reality.
Greg Dickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dickson of Altamont, is ill of measles in his home.

Today’s Headline: Robbery Charges Certified.
Charges against two Covington men arrested in January in connection with several armed robberies in the area were certified to the Alleghany County grand jury.
In celebration of the sixth annual Pioneer Day May 10, the Department of Human and Leisure Services will sponsor an Emblem Contest for area artists aged 5 to 19. Winners in each age category will be presented ribbons.

Today’s Headline: Tuesday Morning Fire Destroys Covington Home.
An early-morning fire caused approximately $49,000 in damage to a home in Covington today. The Covington Fire Department was called to 339 E. Oak St. at 3:57 a.m.
Cindy Earehart Rinker, formerly of Covington, was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Woodstock at the club’s anniversary dinner on Feb. 24.
