MeadWestvaco To Reduce Its Salaried Work Force 3 Percent

MeadWestvaco Corp. is reducing the salaried work force at its Covington paper mill by 3 percent.

Company spokeswoman Becky Johnson said Tuesday that the mill is in the process of cutting costs and manpower “due to extraordinary business conditions caused by the current economic climate.”

Affected employees have been notified that their jobs will be eliminated June 30, Johnson said. Company officials declined to give a specific figure on the number of jobs being eliminated. No hourly employees will be affected.

The job reductions will leave the mill with overall employment of approximately 1,250.

The Specialty Chemicals Division in Covington and extrusion operations in Low Moor employ another 300 workers.
