Clarence Robert “Dick” Bush, 86, formerly of Covington, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in New Kent County, on March 27, 2014.

Dick was the son of the late Robert E. Bush and Grace Miller Bush of Mallow Road, Covington.

He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 62 years, Freda Irene Bush; one daughter, Dr. Leah Linda E. Bush of New Kent; one granddaughter, Austin E. Butler, of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Ethel Simpson of Clifton Forge, and Virginia Jenkins of Richmond, Ky.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Bush served his country well as a World War II Veteran in Japan, a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and a retired school principal with the Department of Defense Dependents’ Overseas Schools.

He was a 1949 graduate of Covington Senior High School and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952 from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn., as well as both a Master of Arts degree in 1953 and a Master of Education degree in 1954 from the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn.  He also received a Local Preacher’s License from the Methodist Church in 1956.

Dick Bush was a 33 degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of both the Covington Moose Lodge and VFW Post 1033.

A memorial service will be held at Arritt Funeral Home in Covington, at 2 p.m. on May 3, Dick’s birthday, with a graveside service to follow at Persinger Memorial Cemetery in Alleghany County.

The family will visit with friends after the service at a location to be disclosed at the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VFW Post No. 1033, 710 E. Dolly E. Dolly Ann Dr., Covington, Va., 24426.
