The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man in connection with internet crimes against children.

On November 3, 2026, Terry Cole Whiteman traveled to Covington, Virginia, where he intended to meet with a minor. Following an investigation, Whiteman was arrested by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Covington Police Department. He was charged with three counts of violating Virginia Code § 18.2-374.3 – Use of communication systems to facilitate certain offenses against minors.

Whiteman was transported to the Alleghany Regional Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.

During the investigation, investigators uncovered additional information and strongly believe there are other victims associated with Whiteman. The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, where Whiteman is from, as the investigation continues. Both agencies are working to identify anyone who may have been victimized.

Anyone who has information regarding Terry Cole Whiteman, or believes they may have been a victim, is strongly encouraged to contact law enforcement.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact either of the following agencies: Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office: Ask to speak with Investigator Jeremy Morris at 540-965-1770, Ext. 107.

Nelson County Sheriff’s Office: Contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 434-263-7050 or 800-750-5757 and provide information related to this investigation.

Investigators strongly believe there may be individuals who have not yet come forward. Anyone who has had previous contact with Whiteman or has information that could assist with this investigation is encouraged to speak with law enforcement. Even information that may seem minor could be helpful.

The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the public’s assistance as investigators continue working with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office to identify additional victims.

This investigation remains active and ongoing.
