COVINGTON, Va. (VR) — Street repairs, gas line upgrades and the completion of a $7 million sewer project were among the updates presented during Covington City Council’s work session.

City Manager Allen Dressler reported that Columbia Gas plans to begin using the newly replaced downtown gas lines during the first or second week of December. Paving continues in areas disturbed by the project, and Dressler said residents have offered positive comments about the work.

The second phase of the gas line project will cover Fudge Street, Cherry Street and Parrish Court, with work continuing into spring 2027. Columbia Gas and city officials are working together to develop an estimate for repaving downtown.

Sidewalk repairs also continue across the city, and bids will be sought for repairs at Collins Park.

Dressler reported that the $7 million sewer project is complete. The accounting department is working to secure funding for work on the Rooklins building.

Council was also advised that a presentation concerning employee bonuses at the Alleghany Highlands Department of Social Services is scheduled for next week.

Dressler said Mayor Hunter is expected to be released from rehabilitation this weekend.

Council unanimously approved the consent agenda.
