HARRISONBURG, Va. (VR) — For Alleghany Highlands residents looking for a fall day trip, the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum and Botanical Gardens at James Madison University offers an opportunity to enjoy the changing leaves without traveling far from home.
Located on the JMU campus, the 125-acre woodland preserve features more than three miles of walking trails, gardens, a pond and wooded areas that provide a quiet escape from the surrounding city.
Fall is one of the best times to visit. The arboretum’s oak, hickory and maple trees turn shades of yellow, orange and red, providing plenty of opportunities for photography and sightseeing. The paved walkways surrounding Plecker Pond are especially popular, offering views of the colorful trees reflecting off the water.
The arboretum is also home to a variety of wildlife, particularly birds. Visitors may spot northern cardinals, Carolina chickadees, mourning doves, woodpeckers, Carolina wrens and white-breasted nuthatches.
During the warmer months, the botanical gardens attract butterflies and other pollinators, while dragonflies and damselflies are common around the pond.
In addition to its walking trails and gardens, the arboretum offers educational programs, guided tours, lectures and special events throughout the year.
Admission is free, and the grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. Parking is available near the Frances Plecker Education Center, including accessible spaces.
The arboretum is located at 780 University Boulevard in Harrisonburg, making it an easy day trip for Alleghany Highlands residents looking to enjoy the fall scenery.
