BEDFORD, Va. (VR) — Looking for a day trip without traveling too far from home? Just a short drive from the Alleghany Highlands, Peaks of Otter offers mountain scenery, hiking trails and a chance to explore one of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s most popular destinations.
Located at Milepost 85.6, Peaks of Otter has welcomed visitors for generations. Its history as a mountain getaway dates back to the 1800s, when area residents opened their homes and lodges to travelers seeking fresh air and relaxation.
Today, the area remains a popular destination for families, hikers and those simply looking to spend a few hours enjoying the outdoors.
One of the biggest attractions is Sharp Top Mountain. The 1.5-mile trail to the summit provides some of the best views in the region, overlooking the surrounding mountains, Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont.
The climb is steep and challenging, taking approximately two hours to reach the top. Visitors should bring plenty of water and wear appropriate footwear. A seasonal shuttle service also provides transportation to within a quarter-mile of the summit.
For those wanting something less demanding, Abbott Lake offers a one-mile walking trail that circles the water. The accessible trail provides views of the mountains and is a popular choice for families and casual walkers.
Several other trails offer opportunities to explore the area. The 0.8-mile Elk Run Loop takes visitors through the forest near the visitor center, while the 3.3-mile Harkening Hill Loop leads to scenic overlooks and Balance Rock, a large boulder resting on a smaller rock.
History is another part of the Peaks of Otter experience.
Johnson Farm, a restored mountain homestead dating to the 1850s, provides a look at life in the Blue Ridge Mountains more than a century ago. Visitors can reach the farm by hiking approximately 1.1 miles from the visitor center, with seasonal demonstrations offering additional insight into the area’s past.
More adventurous hikers can tackle Flat Top Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 4,004 feet, or explore Fallingwater Cascades, where a woodland trail follows a series of waterfalls and rock formations.
Hiking isn’t the only activity available. Visitors can enjoy fishing at Abbott Lake, have a picnic or stop for a meal at Peaks of Otter Lodge. Overnight lodging and camping are also available for those wanting to extend their visit.
The visitor center offers information about the area’s history, trails and attractions.
Families with younger children can also take advantage of the TRACK Trail program, which encourages outdoor exploration through self-guided activities.
For residents of the Alleghany Highlands, Peaks of Otter makes an enjoyable day trip without the need for extensive travel or planning. Whether hiking to a mountain summit, walking around the lake or simply taking in the views, there is plenty to see and do.
