ALLEGHANY HIGHLANDS, Va. (VR) – You don’t have to travel far to enjoy some of Virginia’s best fall scenery. Right here in the Alleghany Highlands, the Jackson River Scenic Trail offers miles of colorful mountain views, peaceful surroundings and an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
Stretching 16 miles from Covington into neighboring Bath County, the trail follows the former Hot Springs Branch of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Much of the route runs alongside the Jackson River, with views of the water, mountains and surrounding woodlands.
Fall is an especially popular time to visit. The trees lining the trail and nearby mountainsides turn shades of red, orange and yellow, providing plenty of scenery for walkers, runners and cyclists.
The trail’s mostly level terrain and crushed gravel surface make it suitable for visitors of all ages and abilities. Along the way, you can enjoy views of waterfalls, rocky cliffs and the Jackson River, with opportunities to spot deer, birds and other wildlife.
The trail has expanded over the years and continues to attract both local residents and visitors to the Alleghany Highlands. While fall brings colorful foliage, the trail remains a popular destination throughout the year.
Access points include Intervale, Petticoat Junction, Smith Bridge, Natural Well and Cedar Creek, allowing visitors to choose how far they want to walk or ride.
For Alleghany Highlands residents looking to enjoy the fall colors, there’s no need to plan a long road trip. Some of the best views are waiting just a few miles from home.
