STAUNTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany High School golf team finished eighth in the Shenandoah District following the fourth and final 18-hole tournament of the season.
Alleghany posted a team score of 383 in the final tournament, bringing its four-tournament total to 1,513.
Jagger Rowland led the Cougars with an 84. Jaxon Deem followed with a 96, while Gavin Rondozzo shot a 101, and Sawyer Knighton shot 102 and Caleb Fisher finished with a 102. Sophie Knighton carded a 108.
Waynesboro won the final tournament with a 316 and finished first overall with a Big Four total of 1,267. Fort Defiance placed second overall at 1,352, followed by Wilson Memorial at 1,362, Staunton at 1,372 and Rockbridge County at 1,379.
Riverheads finished sixth at 1,407, Buffalo Gap was seventh at 1,454, Alleghany eighth at 1,513 and Stuarts Draft ninth at 1,594.
Waynesboro and Wilson Memorial will advance to Region competition as the district’s two 3A teams, while Fort Defiance is a 2A school.
Fort Defiance’s Carter Bird and Waynesboro’s Ryan Harlow each posted a 76 to lead the final tournament. Waynesboro’s Berkley Gibb, the district Player of the Year, shot a 77, while teammate Drew Matherly finished with a 78.
Waynesboro’s roster includes seven seniors who have played together since seventh grade, along with sophomore Gibb, giving the team considerable experience heading into postseason play.
For Alleghany, Rowland’s 84 capped a season in which the freshman earned First Team All-Shenandoah District honors.
