COVINGTON, Va. — The Covington City Council covered several items during Tuesday night’s August meeting, including a resolution honoring a local bowler and discussion of a proposed sales tax referendum that could provide additional funding for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools.
The meeting opened with council’s consideration of a resolution honoring Josh Anglin for his record-breaking bowling achievement.
Anglin was unable to attend the meeting because of a prior commitment. Council approved the resolution unanimously. Anglin will be presented with the resolution at a later date.
Council then turned its attention to Resolution R-26-24, which involves a proposed referendum allowing an increase of up to 1% in the local sales tax to benefit the school system.
AHPS Vice Chair Jay Woodson addressed council on behalf of the school system. Woodson explained that money generated through the proposed tax would be designated for larger capital projects rather than day-to-day operating expenses.
Councilman Tucker asked Woodson to clarify what would be considered a capital project.
Woodson said the funds could be used for building repairs, new construction, school buses and athletic facilities.
Tucker also asked what purchases would be subject to the proposed tax. Woodson explained that groceries and personal care items would be the only categories affected.
Under the proposal, city council would determine how much of the available 1% would be allocated to the school system.
Woodson said the additional revenue would be generated in part by people traveling through the area and making purchases locally.
No action was taken on Resolution R-26-24 during Tuesday’s meeting. Woodson encouraged council to consider placing the referendum on the November ballot.

Eric Tyree then provided council with an update on code enforcement. Tyree also addressed the workload currently facing his office and the amount of work being handled by the department.
