COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany JV baseball battled through a wild middle stretch but came up short in a 5-3 loss to Wilson Memorial on Friday, with the Cougars’ offense stranding runners and the defense working through early pressure.
Wilson Memorial struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on a walk, timely hits, and an Alleghany error to build a 4-0 lead. A double by Roach and run-scoring singles from Coffey and Ostrowski helped the visitors pile up four runs in the frame before Alleghany could settle in.
Joel Bradshaw took the ball for Alleghany and absorbed a heavy early workload, finishing with multiple strikeouts while navigating traffic on the bases. He also contributed offensively with a lineout in the first and later added a single in the seventh.
Alleghany’s offense showed life in the third and fourth innings but struggled to string together sustained pressure early. Carson Cosby collected multiple hits, including a line-drive single, and Ben Skidmore reached on an error and later added a base hit. Talin Raether was hit by a pitch and later singled in a key fourth-inning rally.
The Cougars’ biggest push came in the fourth when they cut into the deficit with a flurry of contact hitting and baserunning. Jace Cantrell and Raether helped spark movement on the bases, and Hayden Wolfe delivered one of the biggest swings of the game with a triple to left that drove in multiple runs as Alleghany trimmed the gap to 4-3.
Wilson Memorial answered in the fifth, pushing across an insurance run on a Borrelli single to extend the lead back to 5-3.
Alleghany’s pitching staff continued to compete late, with Ben Skidmore and relief work helping keep Wilson in check over the final innings. Skidmore also added a strikeout in his appearance.
Offensively, the Cougars had chances in the sixth and seventh, drawing walks and getting runners on, but could not deliver the tying hit. Wolfe, Elmore, and George all went down via strikeout in key late at-bats as Wilson closed it out.
