STAUNTON, Va. (VR) – Alleghany came out aggressive on the mound and competitive throughout, but a late Riverheads surge created separation in a 10-0 final.

Tucker Phillips opened with command working through six strikeouts across the early innings while consistently attacking the zone. He struck out the side in the first inning stretch of work and followed with another strong strikeout frame in the second, keeping Riverheads from building any rhythm early.

The Cougars’ defense backed him up with clean, efficient plays. Jalen Raether handled multiple chances at short, including a key grounder turned into an out at first. Zeke Saville helped stabilize the infield, and Brycen Griffith tracked down a fly ball in left field during the third to keep momentum in check.

Offensively, Alleghany found ways to put pressure on. Graham Brewster started things with a single up the middle, and Buddy Leisure-White added another base hit in the second to keep traffic moving. Brady May delivered a hard single in the fourth, showing life in the middle of the order.

The Cougars’ best sustained push came in the fifth. Kai Rowland dropped down a bunt single, Jalen Raether reached on an error to extend the inning, and Brycen Griffith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alleghany had runners in scoring position and the tying run at the plate, but couldn’t cash in as Riverheads worked out of the jam.

On the defensive side, Alleghany continued to compete pitch-to-pitch. Tucker Phillips mixed in strikeouts with tough outs in play, while infield communication kept several balls in front and limited extra bases through the first four innings.

Riverheads broke through in the middle innings with a string of hits, walks, and timely contact in the fifth to break the game open.

Even with the final score, Alleghany showed clear competitiveness—strong early pitching, multiple hits, and a fifth-inning rally that showed fight with the bases loaded.

Alleghany remains a powerhouse program that competes every inning and will bounce back. There is still a lot of ball to play, the Cougars will hit the road again on Friday to compete against Albemarle.
