COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Alleghany varsity baseball team shuts out Riverheads Gladiators 10-0 on Tuesday before honoring seniors and defeating Rockbridge County Wildcats later in the week.
Against Riverheads, Alleghany used a balanced offensive attack and strong pitching from Brady May to secure the five-inning shutout.
Kai Rowland went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Jalen Raether finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Raether also collected a pair of doubles and led the team with five total bases.
Brady May added two hits and two RBIs, Graham Brewster drove in two runs and drew a walk, and Trey Cook finished with two hits and an RBI. Tucker Phillips added an RBI hit, Buddy Leisure-White scored once and drove in a run, and Brycen Griffith doubled and scored twice.
Alleghany finished with 15 hits in the win.
On the mound, May tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking one.
The Cougars followed that performance with another strong outing against Rockbridge on senior night.
Trey Cook led the offense by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kai Rowland added two hits, while Jalen Raether finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double. Brady May and Brycen Griffith each added hits in the victory.
Graham Brewster scored a run and drew a walk, Tucker Phillips reached base with a walk, and Bronson Shinault was hit by a pitch.
Rowland also delivered on the mound, pitching five innings while allowing one earned run on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.
The Cougars will travel to Fort Defiance on Friday to close out the regular season.
