COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – On March 23, 2026 at approximately 7:30 am, Deputies noticed two packages lying on the front steps of the Alleghany County
Courthouse. The packages displayed writing referencing political unrest.

The scene was immediately secured and an explosives sniffing K9 was dispatched along with agents from the Virginia State Police bomb squad. The courthouse was evacuated and the morning docket was cancelled to be rescheduled at a later date. It was later determined to close the courthouse for the entire day.

The two packages were taken by the Virginia State Police for further evaluation.

As a precautionary measure when the items were recovered all traffic on Main St. was diverted and all local businesses in the area chose to close. This investigation is being taken very seriously and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent once a suspect is found.

This matter is under investigation by the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office along with the Virginia State Police. We would like to thank the following agencies Virginia State Police, Covington Division of Police, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is urged to please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 540-965-1770.

Kyle M. Moore
Sheriff, Alleghany County
