COVINGTON, Va. (VR) – The Covington City Council held its regular July meeting Tuesday evening, moving quickly through its agenda in a quiet session that included a public concern over sidewalk conditions and a preview of an upcoming community event.

Council members unanimously approved the minutes from the previous meeting, with no new business brought forward.

The brief meeting turned its focus to citizen comments and departmental updates.

During the public comment period, a city resident addressed the council regarding the deteriorating condition of the sidewalk in front of her home. The resident, Angella McMillion, voiced frustration over her repeated, unanswered attempts to report the issue. “I’ve called several times and haven’t heard anything back,” she said. McMillion stated that she cares for her elderly mother and that the sidewalk is an accident waiting to happen.

B.B. Bryant, who was sitting in for the city manager, assured McMillion that he would follow up directly and look into the matter.

Police Chief Chris Smith also took the floor, offering a preview of plans for the upcoming National Night Out. He described the event as an important opportunity for residents to meet Covington’s police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel in a relaxed, community-focused setting.

“Usually, when people see us, it’s during a difficult moment in their lives,” Smith said. “National Night Out is a chance to change that and build positive connections.” Details are still being finalized, but the department plans to release more information soon.

With no additional business to consider, the meeting was adjourned by unanimous vote.
