LOW MOOR, Va. (VR) – The scoreboard read 6-1 at the final whistle, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story of Tuesday night’s match between the Alleghany Cougars and the Glenvar Highlanders. What the numbers leave out is the relentless effort, determination, and heart displayed by an Alleghany team that refused to back down against the undefeated, reigning state champions.
The Cougars went toe-to-toe with Glenvar through a fiercely competitive first half, trailing just 1-0 at the break. Glenvar, who entered the match with a spotless 15-0 record and a deep 28-player roster, struggled to break through Alleghany’s disciplined defense and tenacious play.
Goalkeeper James Helmintoller-Quantz was a standout, making six key saves and keeping his team in the fight during critical stretches of the game. His performance was a pillar of strength in a back line that held strong against wave after wave of Glenvar attacks.
In the second half, Glenvar’s depth began to show. With the ability to rotate fresh legs and capitalize on set pieces—particularly corner kicks—they pulled away on the scoreboard. Still, Alleghany didn’t back down.
The Cougars’ resilience was rewarded when Mason Hale calmly buried a penalty kick, scoring Alleghany’s lone goal. That goal carried more weight than most: it was just the second goal conceded by Glenvar all season, a testament to both Hale’s composure and the team’s grit.
Facing a program that has dominated Class 2 Region C for years—and currently holds a top-15 state ranking—Alleghany showed exactly what they’re made of. With a final regular season record of 8-8-0, the Cougars have officially qualified for the Region 3C playoffs.
Despite often being outnumbered—Glenvar dressed twice as many players—Alleghany has proven time and again that they can match any team in spirit, drive, and heart. As the Cougars head into postseason play, they do so with heads held high and a belief that anything is possible.
