ROUTVILLE – Through the first few weeks of the 2024 High School golf season Floyd County has consistently been the top program in the Three Rivers District.
On Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club in Troutville, the Buffaloes took another stride towards a fourth state title in the last five years after picking up another top team performance after shooting a day’s best 303.
Floyd County held off a Radford team that was coming off of their worst performance of the year at the Great Oaks Country Club on Monday afternoon. The Bobcats were kept within reach of the Buffaloes after senior Mason Murphy recorded a 318-yard hole-in-one on a Par 4. RHS finished the day second in scoring with a 322.
Alleghany placed sixth out of the seven team district event after shooting a 344 for the afternoon. It was the lowest the Cougars have placed thus far in four matches this season. AHS was led once again by Haden Spinks who shot an 81. Spinks has led the Cougars in three out of four events. Kai Rowland was just a shot behind Spinks with an 82, while Landon Arritt shot a 90, and Jacob Morris carded a 91 for the first time this season.
Other team performances: Carroll County placed in the top three for the first time this season after shooting a 336. The Cavaliers had finished in 6th place twice and also in fourth place. James River also had a team best day on the green following a fifth-place finish following a 341.
Floyd County’s Peyton Mason was once again the top individual performer after shooting a day’s best 70. This was the fourth time this season that Mason was recognized as the medalist honors.
On Monday, Alleghany will host Wilson Memorial in a 9-hole dual match at the Clifton Dale Country Club.
