ROANOKE (AP) – A former executive who stole more than $42,000 from SunTrust Bank will spend eight months on home confinement.
Douglas Calvin Powell of Roanoke must pay $42,805 in restitution and spend three years on supervised release when he completes his sentence. The 52-year-old Powell was sentenced Monday in U.S. District in Roanoke.
Powell had pleaded guilty in September to bank fraud.
He is a former regional bank operations manager and assistant vice president.
U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy says Powell took advantage of a loophole in the bank’s record-keeping procedures for safety deposit boxes to obtain official checks made to himself.
He used the checks to pay for purchases of personal items made with his corporate credit card.
