HOT SPRINGS – On Monday, May 20th, the number four seeded Giles upset the top-seeded Bath County 5-3 in a Class 1, Region C tennis quarterfinal in Hot Springs.

The Spartans out of the Mountain Empire District, having played eight more matches than the Chargers did during the regular season, did enough to pull off the win and knock out the number one overall seed in the region.

It all began with doubles, which had seemed like Bath County’s go-to for the better part of the season. However, Giles took two out of three from the Chargers and used that advantage to their favor as they headed towards singles where they won three solo matches as well to seal the regional victory.

BCHS was coming off of a Pioneer District championship victory over Parry McCluer just days prior. The Chargers kept each match relatively close. Brooke Hess was the lone Charger to win in both singles and doubles in the match. Abbey Phillips was also a singles winner.

The match between Alyssa DePoppe of Bath County and Morgan Clark from Giles, was not completed due to the Spartans having already clinched the regional victory.

Bath County’s season ended with a 7-4 overall record.

GILES 5, BATH COUNTY 3 – Regional Quarterfinal
SINGLES: Autumn Bowles (GHS) 6-0, 6-0 Sadie Alphin (BCHS)
Abbey Phillips (BCHS) 6-1, 6-1 Sunnie Davis (GHS)
Brooke Hess (BCHS) 6-4, 6-2 Brooke Johnson (GHS)
Ellie Blankenship (GHS) 6-0, 6-1 Adrianna Miller (BCHS)
Hannah Lester (GHS) 6-2, 6-1 Sophie Ailstock (BCHS)
Morgan Clark (GHS)-Alyssa DePoppe (BCHS): no contest
DOUBLES: Bowels/Davis (GHS) 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 Alphin/Phillips
Hess/DePoppe (BCHS) 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 Johnson/Clark (GHS)
Blankenship/Lester (GHS) 6-3, 6-0 Ailstock/Kelsey Eaton

At the Class 1, Region C Doubles tennis tournament semifinals in Riner this past Tuesday, Alphin and Phillips’ contest was cut short due to a shoulder injury to Alphin.

The duo had trailed the doubles team of Gracelyn Alderman and Taylor Shrewsbury from Fort Chiswell, but Alphin and Phillips were in prime position to potentially even up the match with a 6-5 lead before Alphin went down with an injury and could not continue, thus ending the duo’s season due to the injury withdrawal.

Alphin and Phillips ended the season with a 12-3 duos record.
