Betty Bass Wood
Betty Bass Wood, was born in Covington County, Alabama, on January 13, 1933, one of ten children of the Stacy and Aline Bass family and the last direct descendant to pass away. She worked as a telephone operator in Montgomery before meeting her husband, Gerald (Son) Wood, and marrying in 1953. She was a member of the Military Wives Club in Montgomery, and later worked as a teachers’ aide and substitute teacher in Georgia. At the time of Son’s retirement in 1984, they moved to Millboro, Virginia, where they lived for almost 40 years. There, she was a member of Horeb Baptist Church, and enjoyed singing in the choir. Betty was preceded in death by Son Wood in 2017, and continued to live in the home he built until January 2024, when she moved to an assisted living home in Fayetteville, Georgia, near most of her children.
Betty enjoyed games of all kinds, and in younger years, played outdoor games as well; she loved music, movies, and had a lively sense of humor. In recent years, her passions were her family, her faith, home cooking and canning, the Atlanta Braves, and the Alabama Crimson Tide. She suffered a stroke on April 4 and died in the loving care of the staff at Azalea Estates and Southern Grace Hospice on April 14, 2024.
She is survived by her children: JoAnn (Jody) Wood, Connie and Ted Knowles, Becky and Shannon Wilson, Pam and John Giannetto, Rusty and Andrea Wood, and Joyce (Didder) and Johnny Mandeville. There are twelve grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, as well as multiple beloved nieces and nephews.
