ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (VR) – Officials from Alleghany County and Bath County joined community members Friday, May 15, for the re-dedication ceremony of the new historical marker at Falling Spring Falls.
The new two-sided marker replaces an older sign that had previously stood along Route 42 and was created through a collaborative effort between representatives of both counties. Planning for the updated marker began in 2025 after revised text received approval from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
Organizers said the new location was carefully selected to give visitors a safe area to pull off and read the marker while visiting the falls. The sign tells the stories and historical significance of both Alleghany and Bath counties and their connection to the landmark.
Representatives from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation and Virginia Department of Transportation also attended the ceremony, highlighting the partnership between local and state organizations that helped bring the project to completion.
The updated marker is expected to provide residents and visitors with a safer and more accessible opportunity to learn about the history surrounding Falling Spring Falls
