The 2023-24 boys and girls Pioneer District tournaments are nearly set ahead of Monday.
Prior to our print on Tuesday morning, the top two seeds in the boys’ side of the district tournament will have been determined as Narrows (19-3, 9-1 Pioneer District) played against Parry McCluer (18-4, 9-1 Pioneer District) on mutual ground at James River High School on Monday night. Both the Green Waves and Fighting Blues will receive a first-round bye. The two teams split their regular season contests.
While the top two seeds get determined, the first-round of district games also began on Monday night when 4-seeded Highland (9-10, 4-6 Pioneer District) hosted 5-seeded Bath County (11-12, 2-8 Pioneer District) in Monterey. The winner of that game will either play at Narrows or Parry McCluer on Wednesday in the semifinals. The Rams swept the regular season with the Chargers, winning 59-48 and 52-37.
In the other first-round matchup, 3-seeded Eastern Montgomery (6-14, 5-5 Pioneer District) hosted Craig County (7-13, 1-9 Pioneer District) on Monday in Elliston. The winner of that game plays at either Narrows or Parry McCluer on Wednesday in the other boys semifinals. The Mustangs were 2-0 against the Rockets during the regular season, winning 67-40 and 54-46.
On the girls’ side of the district tournament, they are all set.
With only five schools in the district due to Bath County not fielding a varsity team, Parry McCluer (17-3, 8-0 Pioneer District) earned a first-round bye from Monday night’s matchups.
In the only first-round game held on Monday night, 4-seeded Eastern Montgomery (4-15, 3-5 Pioneer District) hosted 5-seeded Highland (1-14, 0-8 Pioneer District) in Elliston. The Mustangs were 2-0 in the regular season against the Rams, winning 55-17 and 39-18. The winner plays at Parry McCluer Wednesday in the semifinals.
The other semifinal takes place on Wednesday in Narrows when the 2-seeded Green Waves (10-11, 6-2 Pioneer District) hosts 3-seeded Craig County (7-11, 3-5 Pioneer District). NHS swept their regular season series with the Rockets, winning 62-30 and 76-42.
For both the boys and girls district tournaments, the higher seeded winner will host the finals.
