Jay Patrick Scruggs
Jay Patrick Scruggs, 64, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2024, at home after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Born September 19, 1959, he was a 1977 graduate of Alleghany County High School. After completing the apprentice program, he went to work as a Millwright at Westvaco’s Covington Mill.
Until developing Multiple Sclerosis, Jay was a motorcycle enthusiast and avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He served the community as a life-member of the Westvaco Rescue Squad as an EMT and Cardiac Tech, helping them win multiple competitions and state championships. He was also an original member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Jay is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Joyce Scruggs of Covington, and survived by his sons Jason and wife Whitney of Stephens City, VA, and Phillip and wife Kassi of Middletown, VA. He was the proud grandfather of Morgan, Emma, Jeremiah, and Audrey.
He’s also survived by two sisters: Tammy Scruggs-Duncan and husband Kenny and Jean Ann Anderson and husband Corbin; nieces Erin Via & husband Creigh and Evelyn Amos & husband Joe; nephews Donovan Anderson & wife Autumn and Patrick & wife Jessica Scruggs; a great-niece and four great-nephews.
In keeping with his wishes, a private service will be conducted at a later date.
