On Monday, January 8th in Hot Springs, Bath County and Riverheads played to the final seconds of the game where the Chargers prevailed 62-59 winners in a non-district basketball contest.
After overcoming a sluggish start to the game in which the Gladiators opened with an early nine-point lead, the Chargers took an early first quarter two-point lead before going into the half with the score tied at 30-30.
In the third period, the Bath County defense held Riverheads to only four points as the Chargers built an eight-point lead.
In the game’s closing minute with 50 seconds remaining, BCHS led 58-56. The Gladiators would miss multiple opportunities to tie the game. On a fast break the team had a wide-open layup that rolled off of the front of the rim. On the ensuing offensive rebound the team missed the putback.
Following the key misses from Riverheads that would have potentially tied the game, Andrew Turner knocked down 1-of-2 free throw attempts to push the Bath County lead to 59-56.
With under 40 seconds left, Riverheads missed a mid-range jump shot that would have only closed the gap to one point had it gone in. The Gladiators were forced to foul and put Wyatt Campbell on the free throw line. Campbell, who scored a game-high 25 points, knocked down 1-of-2 free throw attempts to push the Chargers lead to 60-56.
Down four points now with 10 seconds remaining, Chase Donathan connected a corner 3-pointer to keep Riverheads in the game as the team was now down only a point at 60-59.
After a pair of crucial free throws were put down by Bath County, the Chargers had possession of the ball on the sideline with 2.3 seconds and were able to successfully inbound the basketball and run the games clock out without giving Riverheads a chance to potentially tie the game.
Along with Campbell’s 25 points, Issac Ingram scored 12 for Bath County, while Luke Turner added 11.
J.P. Crawford led Riverheads in scoring with a team-high 24 points.
