On January 11, 2024, the Alleghany Cougar (boys and girls) Varsity Indoor Track Teams travelled to Roanoke College to compete in several categories at the “East Coast Elite” event. Many of Alleghany’s own athletes fared very well against the best of the best in the state, getting high marks in their respected events, while two in particular took away first place wins: Brady Prior and Kiera Lowman.

Brady Prior competed in the 500-meter dash, capturing the first-place win with a time of 1:09.87. Maddox Wickline (9th) and James Ross (13th) also competed in the event, their times being 1:18.62 and 1:19.64 respectively. Additionally, the boys relay team finished second place with a time of 9:11.23 in the 4×800-meter relay event.

Meanwhile, Kiera Lowman -2-time winner of the state title in cross country for the past two years- also took home a first-place win in the 1600-meter run. Her time was an impressive -though not surprising- 5:20.27. Also competing in the event were Faith Barron (5th, 6:01.59) and Maggie Hensley (9th, 6:22.80).

Additionally, the girls’ relay team made history during Thursday’s meet when they broke the school record in the 4×800-meter relay, finishing with a time of 10:59.09. Congratulations are certainly in order for this incredible young group of female athletes! Apart from breaking the school record, the girls placed second in the event.

Apart from Prior and Lowman, several members of the boys and girls indoor track teams placed among the top 10 in their events: Faith Barron, Maggie Hensley, Max Madsen, Maddox Wickline, Josh Anglin, Miles Christian, and Jackson Westfall. We congratulate all of these Cougar athletes for a job well done!

Iron Gate Town Attorney Jared Jenkins defended himself against the Virginia State Bar during the January 17th hearing held in Rockbridge County Court. Jenkins faced multiple allegations of misconduct, but the judges decided that the bar had only met their burden of proof on two of them. Iron Gate mayor, Gary Craig, says Jenkins will be appealing them both and will continue to hold his position with the town as those appeals work themselves out. (Jennifer Bailey Photo)
