Following road victories for the Alleghany Cougars (6-1, 2-1 Three Rivers) and the Bath County Chargers (7-0, 1-0 Pioneer), both programs moved up in the latest Virginia High School League (VHSL) Week 3 Power Rankings.

In the Class 3, Region C – Alleghany moved up from the 6th to the 5th following a 27-10 victory over the Glenvar Highlanders. It was the first time since 1983 that an AHS school defeated Glenvar.

Senior Purcel Turner scored all four of the Cougars touchdowns. Turner rushed for three scores and also returned the opening kickoff of the second half 98-yds to the end zone.

If the season had ended today, Alleghany as the 5-seed would play on the road against the 4-seeded Spotswood Trailblazers (7-1, 3-0 Valley). The Trailblazers moved back from third to fourth despite a 21-7 victory on the road over Harrisonburg. The two schools were slated to play each other in last week’s rankings as well.

Alleghany and Spotswood are on a collision course to play each other in the first round. The Cougars will likely win their final three games (vs Patrick County, at James River, and vs Floyd County). The Trailblazers meanwhile host Rockbridge County this week and end their season against a current unbeaten Turner Ashby, who sit at the two-slot on the regional power rankings. We could see this matchup with either school being the host depending on final outcomes.

Meanwhile out in the Class 1, Region C –  Bath County moved up from 3rd to 2nd after the team continued playing dominant football following a 49-0 shutout victory over the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs. It was the Chargers second straight shutout and third in their last four games.

Junior Wyatt Campbell once again at the center stage with a five-touchdown performance to help lead the Chargers to their first 7-0 start since 2003.

Similar scenario, if the season ended today; the Chargers as the 2-seed would host the 7-seeded George Wythe (4-3, 1-1 Mountain Empire).

Bath County moved up one slot in this week’s power rankings as Narrows went down from two to three. The final two and three power ranking could come down to the Chargers and Green Waves showdown on November 3rd at Carl F. Williams Field. The winner in all likelihood will finish second unless the unbeaten Grayson County Blue Devils slip up and allow for the Chargers (should they remain unbeaten) move into the top-seed in the region.

Things are only heating up and we still have three weeks remaining. There’s already a ton of movement with schools moving up and down. With just a few weeks remaining we’ll see a lot more than that.
