ROANOKE – On Friday at Vineyard Park in Roanoke, the Bath County Chargers (5-0), on the road, picked up their fifth win of the season to remain unbeaten following a 63-28 victory over the Roanoke Catholic Celtics.
Junior Wyatt Campbell continued to be a force to be reckoned with after putting together another spectacular performance leading Bath County with five touchdowns. Campbell finished the game with 223 yards on the ground and another 45 yards in the air. Campbell now has 26 total touchdowns through the first five games.
Along with Campbell’s production, senior Hunter Waldeck had stellar game for the Chargers with three touchdown runs. Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, senior Andrew Turner had a pick-6.
In the first quarter Bath County scored the game’s first 12 points on touchdown runs from Campbell from five yards out and a one yarder from Waldeck.
With just over a minute left in the first quarter freshman Demarcus Brown put Roanoke Catholic on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown run.
Just as the Celtics found new ground in the game, less than a minute into the second quarter, Bath County found themselves back in the end zone on a four-yard touchdown run by Campbell. The touchdown drive by the Chargers was led by a few 10-yard plus runs from sophomore Luke Turner.
As Bath County built back up a double-digit lead, Roanoke Catholic came right back with a 56-yard pitch and catch from Brown to Kyshead Arrington. The Celtics were back in the game at 20-16.
The entire second quarter was a back-and-forth trade of scores. There was a combined 51 points in the quarter.
Bath County, with just over two minutes left, would build a 36-20 lead on a 55-yard touchdown run from Campbell.
After all the back-and-forth scores, Roanoke Catholic would not go away. The Celtics would answer Bath County once again less than a minute later on a 67-yard kickoff return from Arrington.
Now down single digits once again at 36-28, all the momentum would carry over for Roanoke Catholic. Wrong!
The Celtics left too much time on the clock for Bath County. The Chargers would get a big 21-yard reception from An. Turner on a pass from Campbell which put the team on the one-yard line with less than 30 seconds in the first half. Seconds later, Campbell would score from a yard out for his fourth touchdown of the half.
At the end of the first half the Chargers led 43-28.
In the second half Bath County would pull away for good as the team would score the last 27 points of the game. An. Turner would put the icing on the cake late in the third quarter with his defensive touchdown on his pick-6.
The 63-point outing was a season-high for Bath County. It’s the first time the Chargers have scored 60 or more points since 2017 when they defeated Grace Christian (Staunton) 62-18. It’s also the first time since the 2018 season that the program has won at least five games.
Bath County will have two weeks to get ready for the Auburn Eagles as the Chargers will be on their bye week this week. The Chargers will host the Eagles at Carl F. Williams Field on October 6th.
